Ink or Toner Printer Cartridges
The myth of the paperless office has been thrown around the media and business for over a decade. Every year, businesses plan on reducing their printing and paper use but ultimately, at the end of the day it is much easier and more convenient to click your print button, walk over to your printer and pick up your printed work materials. What happens though, when you come up to your printer and realise that there is no print out ready because you have run out of ink or toner in your printer cartridges?[caption id="attachment_3478" align="alignright" width="300" caption="which printer cartridge is right for you?"]

Simply put it’s time to call your local cartridge supplies shop and order more. Buying cartridges can be an unpleasant endeavour. They are not a glamorous or “fun” product to buy and generally cost a lot of money.
Luckily there are several ways to make savings when buying printer supplies.
Genuine Cartridges come from OEM’s like Hewlett Packard or HP, Epson, Canon, Brother, Lexmark, Xerox, Konica Minolta and Samsung. Generally considered to be the best quality, reliability and most suitable for important printing such as presentations and client portfolios.
Compatible Cartridges – Manufactured by third party suppliers from new materials and made to fit and function just like the OEM product, but with a much friendlier and less painful pricetag, these cartridges are favoured by many home users as they deliver good print quality and an excellent price/performance ratio. Sometimes these cartridges can be less reliable than Genuine Cartridges but are still suitable for print outs for reading while offline, email archiving and draft work. They are also often suitable for assignments, client handouts and important work that must be of a high quality. Especially in the case of black toner cartridges, compatibles are extremely economical, reliable and of very high quality. I would never hesitate to recommend a compatible black toner to an end user of any kind.
Ink Refills – Sometimes a local store is able to refill ink cartridges for you. This method is also very cheap but at times quite unreliable. The important things when having your cartridges refilled are:
- Don’t let them dry out too much before you take them in to be refilled. The longer ink dries, the harder it is to get it flowing through the cartridge again. It is much better to refill your cartridge and store it for a while, than to store an empty cartridge and then try to refill it when it is completely dry.
- Don’t simply place them in a plastic bag. Especially the colour cartridges, because the plastic will cause the ink to run from one colour into the other and contaminate the cartridge. Simply wrap your cartridges in some paper before placing them in a plastic bag and taking them in to be refilled.
- Make sure you go to a reliable cartridge refiller who guarantees their work so if you have any problems, they can fix them for you or give your money back.
Paper, printing and printer cartridges are with us to stay. As the first humans had a need to decorate their surroundings by placing markings on the walls, so will we always have a need to print and read on paper? The paperless office, if it ever happens is still a very long way in our future.
